Links van het kanaal komt, na de sluis, een retentiegebied voor de opvang van (hoog) water. .De kleinere sluis (r) geeft toegang tot de Maas naar Roermond. Voor schepen naar het noorden biedt het kanaal een kortere en snellere route dan de oorspronkelijke Maasroute. De aanleg van het sluiscomplex zorgde er voor dat een enorme bocht in de Maas afgesneden kon worden (de Lus van Linne).Lock complex at Heel with double-lock for the Lateral canal (l). Left of the canal, after the lock, a retention area is created for the reception of (high) water..The smaller lock (r) provides access to the Maas to Roermond. For ships to the north, the channel offers a shorter and faster route than the original Maasroute.
